I met with Elias a few weeks ago (my composer) to discuss what I wanted for this assignment. We discussed my initial influences to start with, looking at the soundtracks of Dune Part 1 (Denis Villeneuve), The Green Knight (David Lowery) and The Tragedy of MacBeth (Joel Coen) as I love the way the scores build tension and dread in these films. The use of bass to create the atmosphere and environment, which set my nerves on edge is exactly what I am after in my film. We then looked at some other soundtracks, developing on my initial influences, specifically The Arrival which was composed by Jóhann Jóhannsson, which was the perfect balance between organic and alien sounding, so that was introduced to the sound palette as an influence. Ultimately my main notes were I wanted something that incorporated organic, squelchy, oozy sounds, with this big droning bass, and a sort of alien-sci-fi sounding mid-range to lead the narrative of the film. Something that would set the audience on edge and unsure of what they are going to be seeing. I also showed Elias the film 'First Light' by Jonathan Glazer, which has the most amazing score, which will be a big infleunce for this film, as it's using all the weird, alien, organic noises that I like.
I am anticipating the composition to reflect 'First Light' and 'Arrival' the most, as these were the two that we discussed at great length, and I feel like the 'vibes' of these will inspire something fantastic for 'The Descent'. In addition, the 'Hans Zimmer Bass' will hopefully me coming through, as I love the throbbing, pulsing of it.
Please feel free to listen to each of the songs below so that you can understand where the references are coming from.
I'm feeling very optimistic!
