Over the past few months I have been experimenting with mixed media in the shorts I have been making. This includes black-and-white film photography and typography incorporated into the film. I first experimented with this in my Biophilia Hypothesis documentary and have been exploring it since. I've enjoyed doing this as it brings another dimension to my work. In one of my experiments in my portfolio, the majority is film stills combined with sound design and I feel like it effectively creates an unsettling mood and tension. Azadeh did mention that the portrait shots feel a little too reminiscent of social media because they are portraits, which is not what I was going for, so I adapted that a bit on screen. I want the viewer to be able to see references to pre-raphaelite art in the composition of these abstract experiments, as this is a big visual pull for me.
The motivation for using black and white film for me, is that it creates a really strong contrast from the colour of the footage, enhancing details and symbols to make them stand out. I like the texture of the film, the graininess up close in tandem with the sound design feels quite unsettling. The most striking image is that of the close-up of Evie's eyes, the emotion feels so raw and their gaze penetrates the soul.
